Set in the village of Anatevka, this musical tells the story of Tevye, a poor dairyman, as he tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of their tight-knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Its charm, humor, warmth, honesty and universal themes cut across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion.
Tevye – the heart and conscience of “Fiddler.” Must have a strong, easily projected voice that can fill a performance space.
Golde – the backbone of the family. She should have a commanding voice.
Tzeitel – oldest daughter of Tevye & Golde, sets the plot into action by her determination to marry Motel.
Hodel – strong, independent middle child of the three older daughters. Need a good singer/actor.
Chava – an introspective young woman who favors books over other pursuits. Her love for the young Russian, Fyedka, tests her father’s love and provides the largest conflict in the story.
Perchik – should be able to hold his own with Tevye. A strong character, he clashes with Tevye idealistically, but is likable, charming, and ultimately a member of the family.
Lazar Wolf – a butcher with featured singing in "To Life," he must be able to sell the song.
These roles are comedic parts that do not rely on great singers: The Fiddler: a strong actor who can hold the attention of an entire audience with movement, facial expression and dance. Motel: the young tailor who marries Tzeitel. A young Woody Allen type works well with a decent voice.Yente: a matchmaker, a young woman who captures the feel of the Jewish matchmaker, without making her a stereotype. The Constable: local sheriff who adds a sense of threat, foreboding and conflict. Fyedka: a young Russian soldier who falls in love with Chava. Need a strong actor, needn’t be a singer. Also: Villagers of all ages and Russian Soldiers.
