Roles (scroll down for monologues)

Stage ages and vocal ranges are guidelines. Ranges are included where provided by MTI.

Principal Roles

Violet Newstead — Stage age 40–50 | F3–D5
Consolidated’s capable, ambitious head secretary and a single mother. Violet knows the company inside and out, stands up for what she believes in, and is determined to earn the promotion she deserves.

Doralee Rhodes — Stage age 20–30 | G3–E5
Hart’s warm, spirited secretary. Frequently underestimated and judged by her appearance, Doralee proves that she is intelligent, loyal, compassionate, and fully capable of defending herself.

Judy Bernly — Stage age 30–35 | A♭3–F5
Newly separated and entering the workforce for the first time. Judy begins the story insecure and overwhelmed but gradually discovers her confidence, independence, and personal power.

Franklin Hart Jr. — Stage age 45–50 | C3–G♭4
A powerful executive at Consolidated and the story’s primary antagonist. Hart can appear charming when it benefits him, but underneath he is arrogant, dishonest, sexist, and controlling.

Roz Keith — Stage age 35–45 | G3–C5
The office manager and Hart’s devoted informant. Proper and tightly controlled on the surface, Roz conceals an intense and hilariously passionate attraction to her boss.

Featured Roles

Joe — Stage age 25–35 | B2–G4
A kind, sincere accountant who respects Violet’s abilities and is romantically interested in her.

Dwayne Rhodes — Stage age 25–30 | E2–G4
Doralee’s affectionate, supportive husband, who believes in her and encourages her professional ambitions.

Josh Newstead — Stage age 15–18
Violet’s somewhat awkward teenage son. He loves his mother but occasionally adds to the demands she is already balancing.

Missy Hart — Stage age 20–35
Hart’s cheerful wife, who remains unaware of her husband’s behavior at the office.

Maria — Stage age 20–30 | F4–D5
A lively young secretary at Consolidated who becomes the victim of one of Hart’s unjust decisions.

Dick Bernly — Stage age 35–45
Judy’s soon-to-be ex-husband. After leaving Judy for another woman, he is surprised to discover that she is learning to thrive without him.

Kathy — Stage age 30–40 | G4–D5
A secretary at Consolidated who always seems to know—and share—the latest office gossip.

Margaret — Stage age 30–40
A longtime secretary whose drinking becomes a recurring source of workplace comedy.

Russell Tinsworthy — Stage age 50–65
Chairman of Consolidated’s board and Hart’s superior. Authoritative but fair-minded, he may understand more about Hart’s conduct than Hart realizes.
